home50_1451Everyone loves to design there house themselves, be it a small cottage or a plush mansion. And now when industrialization and urbanization have taken their toll, what we are trying is to reclaim the natural surroundings. We are certainly pleased with ourselves, for our technological advancement but somewhere in our hearts, we know that something is definitely missing. Now, we have started admiring nature and are trying to reproduce the designs that nature has evolved.

The architects, Maartje Lammer and Boris Zeissers are playing with architecture to form what one can say ‘a natural home‘. The architects have named their remarkable summer home the Dragspelhuset, or “accordion house“, and, this cabin has caught the eye of the international architectural media.

It is delightful to see what architects can do with a cabin without involving latest gadgets. The charisma of this house is that it expands and contracts according to climate. But it is not one of those luxurious ones. It has no electricity, heat, phone, or running water. It consists of an open living/dining/kitchen area, with one bedroom and a sleeping loft which occupies the old shack that is connected to the movable structure.

The cooking is done by propane gas; heated by a wood-fueled stove, whose chimneys make their way through the house’s retracting head. And we do have a loo hut too. home-56_1451

The exterior is stunning with the red cedar shingles that appear like the skin of a lizard. The cabin has been imported from Canada as the local wood is soft and needs to be painted again and again. But the cedar skin of the cabin will emerge fresh each year. The interiors are in a match to heaven. The walls are lined with silver birch laths and are draped. The furniture is lightweight and contemporary. The lighting is powered by solar panels. You can open the windows in the summers to allow the cool breeze to refresh you and get cozy in the winters after contracting your house. Isn’t that cool?

It is indeed a magical place to live in.
