Insight:
We have seen dozens of eco-friendly vehicles already zooming on the concrete roads. And more are waiting to shift from conceptual stage to production unit. But that covers the green drive for the terrestrial section of our globe. What about the other 71% that is covered with blue waters? Mochi Craft, a branch of Ferretti Group, has sailed in with the ‘world’s first hybrid yacht’ to drop a green anchor on the nautical front. Unveiled at the 48th Salone Nautico Internazaionale, the Long Range 23 gets the green tag due to the hybrid propulsion system that is exclusively manufactured by the technology unit of Ferretti.

Design Status:
The Long Range 23 has recently been launched.

Usability:
With such hybrid yachts on the horizon, it won’t be long before we can bring the escalating graph of pollution levels in the environment to a halt. With more and more yachts surfacing up on the waters, such an eco-friendly concept will be welcomed by sailors with eco-consciousness. Sporting a diesel-engine combination, this 75 feet water vehicle leaves little or nil carbon footprints over the seas and oceans. Depending on the drive it is running on.

With a RINA Green Star certification up its sleeve, the Long Range 23 also boasts of enhanced hydrodynamic capability as well as static stability.

First of all, what a beautiful boat.
Second of all, I think it is great that this is out there. Yachts are huge gas guzzlers. Every step we can take to have a positive influence on the environment is so important! This is the first I have heard about a hybrid boat, hopefully there will be many more!
Thank-you for this great post!

What a piece of cr*p. It is ugly, it is hostile to the environment (fuel and noise) - I have no idea why anybody would buy such a thing or any large motor boat for that matter. Maybe because they like the idea of driving too much. :P
These boats comsume HUGE amounts of fuel (quote for a smaller sized boat was 70 litres an hour), making it a hybrid won’t make it green, far from it.
You want to go green on the sea? Learn sailing and get a sailboat - no pollution, more peace, more freedom (ou’re not restricted by your fuel tank), more fun.
This piece of **** is about as eco friendly as a tank. Fuel comsumption of boats like this is huge - quote for a smaller non-hybrid: 70 liters per hour! Making it hybrid won’t reduce the fuel consumption enough to make it even remotely eco-friendly.
You want to go green? You want to go on the sea? Get a sailboat. More fun, more peace (noise pollution is a problem with the ugly thing above too), complete freedom thanks to its unlimited range.
Bah. There was an SQL error on the first post and I thought it wasn’t posted. :(
While some people now a days do prefer complete green ’no horse power’ sailboats, there will always be demand for yachts, so its a welcome news to see manufacturers trying to make them Green. There may be a long way to go before we can have true Green yachts, but this is definitely a good beginning.
Thanks for the informative post.
Sven, take a minute and go check the page that the poster linked too. Sure, this thing isn’t as green as a sailboat, BUT some people don’t want a sailboat, thats the way it is. if you check the stats, this thing has a range of 1520 NM at 9 knots with a 7800 liter tank. That equals out to approximately 45 liters an hour, going full out at long range cruising speed. While that is far from green, it is far less impactful then 70 an hour.
Also, you might note that they market one of the advantages being that you can run on full electric for some time, so you can pull into and out of a bay/port without any noise or emissions, preventing any impact from the more shallow environment of the bay area that would not also be made by a sail boat.
I say good first step.
Thanks Kate. I am glad that you enjoyed this post. It is indeed the first of its kind and we certainly hope to see such green yachts hit the waters in the near future.
There’s always a first time for every new trend. I am sure that more improvised and 100% eco-friendly yachts will soon sail over the blue waters.
Thanks Frank for taking time out to explain the goodness and effectiveness of such a green yacht. With the number of yachts hitting the waters, its time users have a choice to opt for eco-friendly versions too.
Deepa, hybrid engines are good for environment and after the automobiles this is the first hybrid yacht, good news.
